| 10:1 For I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were immersed into Moses inside of the cloud and inside of the sea. 3 And all of them ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all of them drank the same spiritual drink. For they were drinking out of the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock then was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not well-pleased with most of them; for they were scattered in the wilderness. 6 These things have now become patterns, models, or allegories to us so that we would not want evil things, as they also wanted. 7 Neither are you to be idolaters, as some of them were; as it was written, “the people sat down to eat and to drink and rose up to play” (Exodus 32:6). 8 Neither should we commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed sexual immorality, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. 9 Neither should we test or tempt Christ, as some of them tested, and were destroyed by serpents. 10 Neither are you to grumble or mutter, as some of them grumbled [in smoldering discontent], and perished by the destroyer. 11 These things happened to them as patterns or models, and were then written for our admonition or warning, to whom the completion of the ages is presently come down. 12 Therefore, let the one thinking to stand take heed lest he fall. 13 Temptation or testing has not seized hold of you except what relates to humans. • God is now faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted or tried beyond what you are able, but will do Himself with you also the way out of the temptation, the ability by which it is carried away [o]. • 14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry [p]. 15 I speak as to sensible people, judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of good-speaking and blessing, which we speak well of and bless, is it not a participation and fellowship of the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation and fellowship of the body of Christ? • 17 Though we are many, yet we are one loaf, one body; for we all partake (q) of the one loaf. 18 Consider Israel according to flesh. Were not those who ate the sacrifices fellow partakers of the altar? 19 What then do I mean? Not that what is sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything. 20 Rather, that the ethnic families sacrifice to demons and not to God. I certainly do not want you to be fellow partakers with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. 22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He? 23 All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all construct [God’s house]. 24 Let no one seek that which is for himself, but that which is for others. 25 Eat anything being sold in the market, inquiring nothing for the sake of consciousness [that is, inside one’s story of self, one’s self-awareness]. 26 For the earth is the Lord’s with all of its full supply. 27 If an unbeliever invites you and you wish to go, eat everything set before you but inquire nothing for the sake of consciousness. 28 If, however, someone should say to you, “This is offered to an idol,” do not eat, for the sake of him who said it and for consciousness – for the earth is the Lord’s with all of its full supply. 29 Now, I am saying “for the sake of consciousness,” not your own, but that of the other; for how is my freedom to be judged by another’s consciousness? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered in that for which I give thanks [speak good grace]? 31 Whether you eat, therefore, or drink, or whatever you do, do all things into the glory of God. 32 Be without cause to stumble both to Judeans and Greeks and to the church of God. 33 As I also in all things please, not seeking profit for myself, but for that of many, that they may be saved. |

| • Covenant: We live always and only inside of God and inside of His Presence made known to us. Essential to the Covenant by which Jesus joins us with the Father is that God alone saves us from all that opposes. God Himself is our way. When we are hit with temptation, we place ourselves, even with all our sin and shame, only into God, in full Trust that He saves us right now. – “Look at me, God, I BELONG to you.” • Definition: An “idol” is anything we might turn to in order to escape from a life shared with God. Some place their sin between themselves and God, because they prefer “sin.” Others place attachments to things in this world. We flee from all into our Father, for sharing Life with a God who KEEPS what we are is the greatest Treasure there could be. |
o. I have translated this verse carefully and accurately to the Gospel meaning. p. Idolatry is trusting in anything except God Himself energeoing His good pleasure inside of us (see Philippians 2:13). q. This is the same word as Hebrews 3:14, partakers of Christ. |
