1:1 The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love inside of truth. • 2 Beloved, I pray that in all things you would journey well and prosperously and would be wholesome and of good health, just as your soul journeys well and prosperously. 3 For I rejoiced exceedingly when brothers came and testified of your truth, just as you are walking inside of truth. • 4 I have no greater joy than that I should hear of my children walking inside of the truth.

5 Beloved, you are doing everything faithfully toward your brothers and sisters and even towards those who are strangers, • 6 for they have testified of your love in the presence of the church, whom you do well to send forth equipped in a manner worthy of God. 7 For the sake of His name they went forth, receiving nothing from the ethnic families. 8 We therefore ought to receive and assist such brethren, so that we may be fellow workers in the truth.

9 I have written to the church [a]; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not welcome or accept us as true. 10 Because of this, if I do come, I will bring to his attention the works which he is doing, evil words speaking nonsense against us; and not being satisfied just with speaking words, he not only refuses to receive the brethren, but he even forbids those who intend to do so, and he casts them out of the church. • 11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one doing good is out from God; the one doing evil has not perceived or experienced God. 12 I say to Demetrius, witness has been given by all and by the truth itself, and we also bear witness, and you are aware that our testimony is true.

13 I had many things to write to you, but I don’t want to write with pen and ink. 14 I hope, however, to see you soon, and we will converse together. Peace to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
