John 16 - 21

16:1 I have spoken these things to you so that you might not be ensnared or give offense. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; even more an hour is coming when those who kill you will imagine they are offering a service to God. 3 They will do these things to you because they do not know the Father or Me. 4 But I have said these things to you, so that when their hour comes, you might bring to mind that I said this to you. I did not say these things to you at first, because I was with you then.

5 But now I am led to the One who sent Me, yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are you being led?’ 6 Instead, sorrow has filled your heart because I have said these things to you, 7 But I tell you the truth; it is profitable for you that I should go, for if I do not go, the Helper-Advocate will not come towards you. If I go, then I will send Him to you. 8 When He comes, He will convict the world-cosmos with evidence concerning sin and disconnection from God, and concerning just innocence, and concerning judgment. 9 Concerning sin, indeed, because they do not believe into Me; 10 concerning just innocence, then, because I am led towards the Father and you look upon Me no more. 11 And concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 I still have many things to say to you, but you are not able to carry them now. 13 When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide and instruct you inside of all truth; indeed, He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He hears, He will speak, and the things coming [from God] He will report fully to you. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will receive what is Mine and report it fully to you. 15 All things the Father possesses are Mine; for this reason I said that He will receive what is mine and report it fully to you.

16 In a little while you will not see Me; but then, in a little while more you will see Me, because I am led towards the Father.” 17 Therefore, His disciples said to one another, “What does this mean when He says to us, ‘A little while and you do not see Me’; and again, ‘a little while more and you will see Me?’ And ‘because I am led towards the Father?’” 18 They said further, “What does this mean, ‘A little while?’ We do not know what He is saying.”

19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him, and so He said to them, “Do you inquire among one another concerning what I said, ‘A little while and you will not see Me, and then, a little while more and you will see Me again?’ 20 Let it be so, it is so, as I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will be thrilled. You will be distressed with great pain and grief, but your grief will become joy. 21 A woman who is giving birth experiences pain because her hour has come. But when she brings forth a child, she no longer remembers the pressure because of the joy that a child has been born into the world. 22 In the same way, then, you know grief; but again, I will see you, and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you. 23 And in that day, you will ask nothing of Me. Let it be so, it is so, as I say to you, whatever you might ask the Father inside of My name, He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing inside of My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy might be full and complete.

25 I have spoken these things to you as allegories and figurative language, but an hour is coming when I will speak no more in metaphors, but I will boldly and publicly make the Father known to you. 26 In that day, you will ask inside of My name; and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father concerning you; 27 indeed, the Father Himself regards you with affection because you have cherished Me and have believed that I come forth inside the presence of God. 28 I come out from the Father, and have come into the world-cosmos; again, I leave the world-cosmos and go towards the Father.

29 His disciples said, “See, now You speak boldly and publicly, and not in metaphors and allegories. 30 Now we know that You know all and do not need to ask anyone. We believe that you come forth from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Look, the hour is coming and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own, and you will leave Me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with Me. 33 I have spoken these things to you, so that inside of Me you might have peace. In the world you have pressure within and without, but be of good courage for I have conquered the world.

17:1 After Jesus spoke these things, He lifted up His eyes into heaven, and said, “Father the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son might glorify You. 2 Just as You gave Him authority over all flesh so He should give age-unfolding life to all whom You have given Him. 3  For this is age-unfolding life, that they may know You, the One true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 4 I glorified You upon the earth; I have completed the work that You have given Me to do. 5 Now, glorify Me, Father, inside Your presence, with the glory that I possessed in Your presence separate from the world-cosmos.

6 I made Your name clear and visible to the men whom You have given me out of the world. They were Yours [in the first place, and You gave them to Me, and they have kept, watched over, and guarded Your word. 7 Now they have known that all things You have given Me are inside of Your presence; 8 for the words that You have given Me, I have given them, and they received and seized hold of them and knew truly that I came from Your presence; and they believed that you sent Me.

9 I pray concerning them. I do not pray for the world, but concerning those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all things of mine are Yours, and Yours Mine; and I have been glorified inside of them. 11 I am no longer in the world, and yet they themselves are in the world, and I am coming towards You. Devoted Father, keep, guard, and watch over those whom You have given Me inside of Your name, that they might be one, just as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept those whom You have given Me inside of Your name. I guarded and protected them, and not one of them is lost, except the son of loss and ruin, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming towards You; and these things I speak in the world, that they might possess My joy fulfilled and made complete inside of them. 14 I have given them Your word, and the world hated them, because they are not of the world, in the same way that I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that You should remove them from the world, but that you should keep them away from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Make them pure and devoted to You inside of the truth; Your word is truth. 18 Just as You sent Me into the world, in the same way I also send them into the world. 19 For their sakes, I make Myself pure and devoted to You, that they also might be made pure and devoted inside of the truth.

20 It is not for these, only, that I ask, but also for those who believe into Me through their word, 21 that all might be one, just as You, Father, are inside of Me and I inside of You, that they also might be inside of Us, that the world might believe that You sent Me. 22 The glory which You have given Me, I have given them, that they might be one just as We are one; 23 I inside of them, and You inside of Me, that they might be brought to full completion inside of one, that the world might know that You sent Me, and have loved them in just the same way that You have loved Me.

24 Father, I desire that those whom You have given Me might be with Me where I am, that they might behold My glory that You gave Me, because You loved Me separate from the foundation and blueprint of the world-cosmos. 25 Just and Innocent Father, although the world has not known You, I have known You and these have known that You sent Me. 26 And I made known to them Your name and will make it known, that the love with which You loved Me might be inside of them, and I inside of them.

18:1 Having said these things, Jesus went out with His disciples beyond the winter flow of Kidron, where there was a garden, into which He entered with His disciples. 2 Judas, who was betraying Him, was also aware of this place, because Jesus had often gathered there with His disciples. 3 Judas came, then, as well, having obtained a band of soldiers from the chief priests along with servants from the Pharisees, with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

4 Since Jesus was aware of all things coming upon Him, having stepped out from the garden, He said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” He said to them, “I am.” Now, Judas, who was betraying Him, was standing there with them. 6 Then, when He said to them, “I am”; they went backwards and fell to the ground. 7 Again He questioned them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am. If you seek Me then, allow these others to go away.” 9 (So that the word He had spoken might be fulfilled: “Those whom You have given Me, I have not lost one of them.”)

10 Simon Peter, having a short sword, drew it and struck the servant of the high priest, named Malchus, and cut off his right ear. 11 Jesus then said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”

12 Then the band of soldiers and the commander and the servants of the Judeans together took hold of Jesus and tied him up [so declaring Him to be unlawful]. 13 They led Him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that same year. 14 (This was the Caiaphas who had given counsel to the Judeans that it is profitable that one man should perish for the sake of the people.)

15 Now, Simon Peter and the other disciple [John} were following. Since {John} was known to the high priest, he also entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest. 16 But Peter stood at the door outside. {John], who was known to the high priest, went out, then, and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought in Peter. 16 Then, a servant girl said to Peter and to the doorkeeper, “Are you not also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not!” 19 Now, the servants and the officers, had made a fire of coals and were standing around it, for it was cold, and they were warming themselves. Peter was also with them, standing there and warming himself.

19 Then the high priest questioned Jesus concerning His disciples and concerning His teaching. 20  Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple where all the Judeans come together, and I spoke nothing in secret. 21 Why do you question Me? Question those who heard what I spoke; look – they are aware of what I said.” 22 Because He had said these things, one of the servants standing by hit Him with the palm of his hand and said to Jesus, “Is this how You answer the high priest?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If I spoke evil, bear witness concerning the evil, but if I spoke well why do you strike Me?” 24 Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

25 Simon Peter was now standing and warming himself. Then they said to him, “Are you not also one of His disciples? He denied and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a kinsman of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Then again, Peter denied, and immediately a rooster crowed.

28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, the official residence of the governor. It was now early, and they did not themselves enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 Then Pilate went out towards them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They said to him, “If He were not doing evil things, we would not have handed Him over to you.” 31 Then Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law.” The Judeans said to him, “It is not permitted to us to put anyone to death,” 32 that the word Jesus had spoken might be fulfilled, signifying what death He was about to die.

33 Pilate entered back again into the Praetorium, called Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Judeans?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of yourself or did others say it to you concerning Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Judean! Your own ethnic people and the chief priests delivered You to me. What have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world-cosmos. If My kingdom were of this world-cosmos, My servants would have fought that I might not be betrayed to the Judeans. But My kingdom is not from here.” 37 Then Pilate said to Him, “Then You are a king!” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world-cosmos, that I may bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is out from the truth hears My voice.” 38 Pilate said to Him, “What is the truth?”

Having said this, he went out to the Judeans and said to them, “I find no reason for accusation inside of Him. 39  It is, however, your custom that I should release someone to you on the Passover; do you want me to release to you the King of the Judeans?” 40 They cried out again, saying, “Not this one, but Barabbas!” Now, Barabbas was a violent thief.

19:1 At that point, Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown made of thorns, and put it on His head, and cast a purple robe around Him. 3 They came up to Him saying, “Hail, King of the Judeans!” They kept striking Him with sticks and with the palms of their hands. 4 Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Behold I bring Him out to you so that you may know that I find no cause of accusation inside of Him.”

5 Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!” 6 Then, when the chief priests and their servants saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him; for I find no cause for accusation inside of Him.” 7 The Judeans answered him, “We have a law, and according to the law, He must die, because He made Himself the Son of God.”

8 When Pilate heard this word, he was even more afraid. 9 And he went into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, “From whence are You?” But Jesus did not answer. 10 Pilate said to Him, “Did I not speak to You? Do you not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority against Me, if it were not given to you from above. Because of this, the one who turned Me over to you has the greater sin.”

12 From this, Pilate sought to release Him; but the Judeans cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar. Anyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.” 13 Therefore Pilate, having heard these words, brought Jesus out and sat down upon the judgment seat in a place called the Stone Pavement; and in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 It was now the Day of Preparation of the Passover, at about the sixth hour. And he said to the Judeans, “Behold your King!” 15 They cried out in response, “Away with Him. Away! Crucify Him.” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priest answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 Therefore, he delivered Him to them, that He might be crucified. They then took hold of Jesus.

17 And bearing His own cross, He went out to the place called the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him and with Him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in between. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Judeans. 20 Many of the Judeans, therefore, read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Judeans then said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Judeans,’ but that He said, ‘I am the King of the Judeans.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 Then the soldiers, as they crucified Jesus, took His garments and divided them into four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. The tunic, however, was seamless, woven from the top throughout all. 24 So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it up, but let’s cast lots for it, whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled that said: “They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing, they cast a lot (Psalm 22:18). Indeed, the soldiers did these things.

25 Now, the mother of Jesus, Mary, His mother’s sister, the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene were standing near the cross of Jesus. 26 Then Jesus, seeing His mother and the disciple whom He loved [John] standing near her, said to His mother, “Woman, look at your son.” 27 Then He said to [John], “Look at your mother.” And from that hour [John] took her as his own mother.

28 After this, knowing that all things had been accomplished, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I thirst.” 29 A vessel full of sour wine was sitting there with a sponge in it filled with the sour wine, and a stalk of hyssop placed around it. They brought it to His mouth. 30 Then, when Jesus took the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He yielded over His Spirit.

31 Because it was the time of Preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath, which Sabbath was a high day, therefore the Judeans asked Pilate that their legs be broken and that they be taken away. 32 The soldiers came, then, and did break the legs of the first, and of the other who were crucified with Him. 33 When they came to Jesus, however, they saw that He was already dead, and so they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear and immediately out came blood and water. 35 And the one having seen this [John] has borne witness, and his testimony is true. And he knows the truth that he is speaking, that you also might believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled; “Not one bone of Him will be broken” (Psalm 34:20). 37 And again, another Scripture says, “They will look on the One they have pierced” (Psalm 22:16).

38 After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus (concealed, however, through the fear of the Judeans) asked Pilate if he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. He came then and took away His body. 39 Nicodemus also came, the one who had come to Him by night at the first, bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred litras. 40 They then took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices as is the custom among the Judeans to prepare for burial. 41 Now, there was a garden in the place where He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one was yet laid. 42 Therefore, on account of the Preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus there.

20:1 Now, on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. And she saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2 She ran therefore, and came to Simon Peter and to [John], whom Jesus loved, and she said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

3 Peter and [John] then went out and came to the tomb. 4 At first the two were running together, then [John] ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came first to the tomb. 5 Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not enter. 6 Then Simon Peter also came, following him, and he entered into the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the cloth which was upon His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but by itself, having been folded up. 8 Then [John], who had come first to the tomb, entered also, and he saw and believed. 9 For they did not yet understand the Scripture that it was necessary for Him to rise out from the dead. 10 The disciples then went away again to their place.

11 Mary, however, stood at the tomb outside weeping. Then, as she wept, she stooped down into the tomb, 12 and she saw two angels in white sitting, one towards the head and one towards the foot where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

14 Having said this, she turned back around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek?” Thinking that He was the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him off, tell me where you have placed Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” Turning around, she said to Him, in Hebrew, “Rabboni,” that is to say, “Teacher.” 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not touch Me, for I have not yet ascended towards the Father; go, however, to My brothers, and say to them, “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.” 18 Mary Magdalen came, then, bringing word to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.

19 On the evening of the same day, the first day of the week, with the doors shut [in the place] where the disciples were, because of their fear of the Judeans, Jesus came and stood among them, and He said to them, “Peace to you.” 20 Having said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples rejoiced, having seen the Lord. 21 Jesus then said to them, “Peace to you; just as the Father sent Me forth, so I also send you.” 22 And having said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive Spirit Devoted. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain any, they are retained.”

24 Thomas, however, who was one of the twelve, the one called Didymus [the Twin], was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “If I do not see the mark of the nails in His hands, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” 26 And after eight days, His disciples were again inside and Thomas with them. Jesus came, though the doors were shut. And He stood in their midst and said, “Peace to you.” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Bring your finger here, and see My hands; and bring your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who believe without having seen.”

30 Indeed, many other signs Jesus also did in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 These things, however, have been written so that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that in believing, you may have life inside of His name.

21:1 After these things, Jesus showed Himself visibly again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. He showed Himself, now, in this way. 2 They were together, Simon Peter, and Thomas, called Didymus, and Nathanael, from Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will come with you as well.” They went forth into the boat, but during the night, they caught nothing. 4 When morning came, Jesus was standing on the shore. The disciples, however, did not know that it was Jesus.

5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any fish?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat and you will find some.” They cast in response and were not able to haul it in from the multitude of the fish. 7 Therefore, the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.”

Simon Peter, having heard that it was the Lord, put on an outer garment, for he was naked, and he cast himself into the sea. 8 And the other disciples in the boat came, dragging the net with the fish, for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits away. 9 When they got out onto the land, they saw a fire of coals lying, and fish lying on it, as well as bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have now caught.” 11 Simon Peter then went up and drew the net to the land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three. Although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared to ask Him, however, “How are You?”, knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise. 14 This was now the third time Jesus made Himself visible to the disciples, after he had been raised out from the dead.

15 Then, when they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I dearly care for You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” 16 Jesus said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I dearly care for You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 Jesus said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you dearly care for Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you dearly care for Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, you know all; You know that I dearly care for You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 Let it be so, it is so, as I say to you, when you were younger, you dressed yourself and walked wherever you wanted; when you shall be old, however, you will stretch forth your hands, and another will dress you and will bring you to where you do not want.” 19 He said this, now, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And having said this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”

20 Having turned, Peter saw the disciple whom Jesus loved [john]  following, the one who also had reclined on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is it who is betraying You?” 21 Having seen him, Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If I desire him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” 23 This saying, then, went out among the brethren, that this disciple would not die. Jesus had not said to him, however, that he would not die, but “If I desire him to remain until I come, what is it to you?” 24 This is the disciple [John], bearing witness concerning these things, and the one who wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true. 25 There are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they should be written, every one, not even the world, I suppose, would have the space for all the books that could be written.
