John 6 - 9

6:1 After these things, Jesus went over the sea of Galilee to Tiberius. 2 A great crowd followed him, because they saw the signs which He was doing upon those who were sick. 3 Jesus then went up onto a mountain and sat down with His disciples. 4 It was then nearly the Passover time, the feast of the Judeans.

5 Then Jesus, having lifted up his eyes and seen a great crowd coming towards Him, said to Philip, “From where shall we buy bread that all these might eat?” 6 He said this, however, to quiz him; for He knew what He was about to do. 7 Philip answered Him, “For two hundred denari, the loaves would not be enough for them, that each one might receive a little.” 8 One of His disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Him, 9 “Here is a little boy who has five loaves of barley and two small fish; but what are these for so many?”

10 Jesus said, “Make the people recline,” for there was much grass in that place. Then the people reclined, in number about five thousand. 11 Jesus then took the loaves and, having given thanks [spoken good grace upon them] distributed to those reclining; likewise also of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 Then, when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather together the abundance of fragments over and above, so that nothing might be lost. 13 They gathered, and filled twelve hand-baskets of fragments from the five loaves of barley, which were abundantly above what had been eaten. 14 Therefore, the people, having seen the sign which He had done, said, “This is truly the prophet who is coming into the world-cosmos.”

15 Jesus, then, knowing that they were about to come and seize Him, that they might make Him king, withdrew again into the mountain by Himself alone. 16 When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 and having entered into a boat, they went over the sea to Capernaum. It was dark by then, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 And the sea was stirred up by a strong wind blowing. 19 After rowing about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.  20 Then He said to them, “I am; do not fear.” 21 They willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately, the boat was at the land where they were going.

22 On the next day the crowd  which gathered on the other side of the sea, had seen before that there was no other boat except the one which His disciples had taken, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone. (23 Yet other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they at the bread, the Lord having given thanks [spoken grace]). 24 When the crowd then saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they entered themselves into the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25 And having found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Master, when did You come here?”

26 Jesus answered them, “Let it be so, it is so, as I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were satisfied. 27 Do not work for the food that is perishing, but for the food remaining into age-unfolding life, which the Son of man will give to you. Indeed, the Father, even God, has set His seal upon Him.” 28 They said to Him, “What must we do, that we might be working the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you should believe into Him whom He sent.”

30 Then they said to Him, “What sign, then, do you do, that we might see and believe You? What do you work? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, ‘He gave them bread out from heaven to eat” (Exodus 16:4 & Psalm 78:24). 32 Jesus then said to them, “Let it be so, it is so, as I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread out from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread out from heaven. 34 For the bread of God is that which is coming out from heaven and giving life to the cosmos.” 35 Therefore, they said to Him, “Lord, give us always this bread.”

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; the one coming to Me shall never hunger and the one believing into Me shall never thirst at any time. 36 But I said to you that you also have seen Me and yet do not believe. 37 All whom the Father gives Me will come towards Me, and the one coming towards Me, I will not cast out. 38 For I have come down out from heaven, not that I should do My own intentions, but the desire of the One who sent Me. 39 And this is the desire of the One who sent Me, that all that He has given Me, I should lose nothing of it, but will raise it up in the last day. 40 For this is the desire of My Father, that everyone seeing and experiencing the Son, and believing into Him, should have age-unfolding life; and I will raise him up in the last day.”

41 The Judeans were therefore muttering about Him, because He said, “I am the bread having come down out from heaven.” 42 They were saying, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How, then, does He say, ‘I have come down out from heaven?’”

43 Jesus answered them, “Do not mutter with one another. 44 No one is able to come towards Me, if the Father who sent Me, does not draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘And they will all be taught of God’ (Isaiah 54:13). Everyone who has heard and learned in the presence of the Father, comes to Me. 46 No one has seen the Father, except the One who is in the presence of God, He has seen the Father. 47 Let it be so, it is so, as I say to you, the one who believes possesses life age-unfolding. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died. 50 This is the bread coming down out from heaven, that anyone might eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread, having come down out from heaven. If anyone should eat of this bread, he will live into the age; and also the bread that I will give, My flesh, is for the life of the world-cosmos.

52 The Judeans were therefore arguing at one another, saying, “How is this man able to give us His flesh to eat?” 53 Jesus therefore said to them, “Let it be so, it is so, as I say to you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and do not drink His blood, you do not have life inside yourselves. 54 The one eating of My flesh and drinking of My blood has life age-unfolding, and I will raise him up in the last day. 55 Indeed, my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 The one eating My flesh and drinking My blood abides inside of Me and I inside of Him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live through the Father, so also the one feeding on Me, even he will live through Me. 58 This is the bread having come down out from heaven. Not as the fathers ate and died, but the one eating this bread will live into the age.” 59 These things He said in the synagogue, teaching in Capernaum.

60 Many of the disciples, after hearing this, said, “This word is difficult; who is able to hear it?” 61 Jesus knew, however, inside Himself, that His disciples were muttering about this, and He said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What then if you should see the Son of man ascending where He was before? 65 The Spirit is giving life; the flesh benefits nothing. The words that I speak to you are Spirit, and they are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” Indeed, Jesus knew from the start who did not believe and who it was that would betray him. 65 And He said, “Because of this I have said to you that no one is able to come towards Me, it is granted to him out from the Father.”

66 From that time, many of His disciples departed and no longer walked with Him. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Are you not wanting to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, towards whom will we go? You have the words of age-unfolding life; 69 and we have believed and have known that You are the Devoted One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one out of you is a devil, an accuser?” 71 For He spoke of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who was about to betray Him, one of the twelve.

7:1 After these things, Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Judeans were seeking to kill Him. 9 It was, at that time, near to the feast of the Judeans, the Feast of Tabernacles. 3 For that reason, His brothers said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, so that your disciples will see Your works which You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret who Himself seeks to be in bold in public speaking. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 Not even His brothers believed into Him.

6 Jesus then said to them, “My time is not yet present, but your time is always ready. 7 The world is not able to hate you; it hates Me, however, because I testify concerning it, that its works are evil. 8 You go on up to the feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time is not yet complete. 9 Having said these things, He then remained in Galilee.

10 When His brothers had gone up to the feast, however, Jesus also went up, not visibly, but in secret. 11 Therefore, the Judeans sought Him at the feast and said, “Where is He?” 12 And there was much muttering about Him among the crowds. Some indeed said, “He is good.” Others said, however, “No; rather, He deceives the common people.” 13 No one, however, spoke publicly concerning Him, because of the fear of the Judeans.

14 Now, during the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught. 15 The Judeans marveled, saying, “How does this one know what is written, not having studied?” 16 Them Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not of Myself, but of the One who sent Me. 17 If anyone wants to do His desire, He will know concerning the teaching, whether it is out from God or if I speak from Myself. 18 The one speaking from himself, seeks his own glory, but the one, who seeks the glory of the one who sent Him, He is true, and injustice is not inside of Him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law, and yet not one out of you does the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?

20 The crowd answered, “You possess a demon. Who seeks to kill You?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. 22 Yet Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, that the law of Moses might not be broken, why are you angry with Me because I made a man whole and sound on the Sabbath. 24 Do not judge according to the details of outward appearance, but judge the judgment of just innocence.”

25 Some of those of Jerusalem said, therefore, “Is this not He whom they seek to kill? 26 Look, He speaks boldly in public, and they say nothing to Him, not ever. Truly, have those who rule recognized that this is the Christ? 27 But we know this one, from where He is. The Christ, on the other hand, whenever He might come, no one knows from where He is.

28Jesus, who was teaching in the temple, shouted out, therefore, saying, “You know Me, and you know from where I am; and I have not come of Myself, but the One who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 But I know Him, because I am alongside of Him, in His presence, and He sent Me.” 30 They sought, then, to take Him, but no one laid hand upon Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31 Many of the crowd, moreover, believed into Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than this Man has done?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him and sent the chief priests and the officers of the Pharisees to seize Him. 33 Jesus said therefore, “Yet a little time, I am with you, and I am led away to the One who sent Me. 34 You will seek Me and will not find Me; and where I am, you are not able to come.” 35 The Judeans then said among themselves, “Where is He about to go that we will not find Him? Is He about to go to the dispersion among the Greeks, to teach the Greeks? 36 What is this word that He said, ‘You will seek me and will not find me; and where I am you are not able to come?’”

37 Now, on the last day, the great day of the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus stood [in the moment of complete silence] and shouted loudly, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come towards Me and drink. 38 The one who believes into me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Rivers of living water will overflow out from his belly [his womb, his innermost being]” (Isaiah 44:3). 39 Now He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those having believed into Him were about to receive; indeed, the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

40 Some from the crowd, having heard these words, said, “This is truly the prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” Others, however, said, “Indeed, the Christ does not come out from Galilee. 42 Does not the Scripture say, that the Christ comes out from the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” (Micah 5:2). 43 And so a division happened in the crowd, because of Him. 44 More than that, some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands upon Him.

45 The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The officers answered, “No man has ever spoken like this man speaks.” 47 The Pharisees therefore answered them, “Have you not also been deceived? 48 Has anyone of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed into Him? 48 But this mob of people, who do not know the law, are accursed.” 50 Nicodemus, the one who had formerly come to Jesus, being one of them, said to them, 51 “Does our law judge a man, if it has not first heard from him and knows what he does?” 52 They answered him, “Are you also not from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet is raised up out from Galilee.”

53 And each went to his own home, 8:1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

8:2 Then at daybreak, He returned into the temple and to all the people coming towards Him. Having sat down, He taught them. 3 Then the writers and teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman having been caught in adultery. Having set her between Jesus and themselves, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 [As You well know], in the law, Moses commanded such a person to be stoned. What, therefore, do You say?” 6 They were saying this to tempt Him, so that they might possess the evidence to accuse Him. But Jesus, having stooped down, began writing on the ground with His finger.

7 As they continued asking Him, however, He stood up and said to them, “The one unerring and faultless among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” 8 And having stooped down again, He continued to write on the ground. 9 After hearing this, being exposed in their own consciousness, they began to go away, one by one, beginning with the older ones until the last, and He was left alone, Jesus and the woman with Him. 10 Jesus stood up again, and seeing no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those who accuse you? Has no one condemned you?” 11 And she said, “No one, Lord.” Then Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on, sin no more.”

12 Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to those [who heard], saying, “I am the light of the world-cosmos; the one accompanying Me shall not walk in the darkness [of dishonesty], but will possess the light of life.” 13 In response, the Pharisees said to Him, “You are bearing witness concerning Yourself; Your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered them, “Even if I do bear witness concerning Myself, My testimony is true, because I know from where I came and to where I am going. You, however, do not know from where I come or to where I am going. 15 You judge according to the finest details of the flesh, but I do not judge anyone. 16 Yet if I were to judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent Me. 17 In your law also, it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I bear witness concerning Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies concerning Me.”

19 In response again, they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You perceive and consider neither Me nor My Father. If you had perceived and considered Me, you would also have perceived and considered My Father.” 20 These words He spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one arrested Him, for His hour had not yet come.

21 Then, Jesus said again to them, “I am going away, and you will search for Me, and in your sin and disconnection from God, you will die. Where I go, you are not able to come.” 22 Therefore, the Judeans said to each other, “Will He then kill Himself, that He says, ‘Where I go, you are not able to come’?” 23 Jesus answered them, “You are out from below; I am out from above. You are out from this world-cosmos; I am not out from this world {of death coming out from Adam’s rebellion}. 24  For that reason I said to you that you will die inside your sins. Unless you believe that I Am, you will die inside your sins and your disconnection from God.”

25  In response, they said to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus answered, “From the start, I have been speaking to you, 26 and I have many things to say and to judge concerning you; but the One who sent Me is true; and what I have heard in His presence are the things I speak into the world-cosmos.” {the Greek word is kosmos; which I am translating as “world-cosmos.”} 27 But because they did not know that the Father was speaking to them, 28 Jesus said to them, “When you have raised high the Son of Man, then you will know that I Am, and that I do nothing out from Myself. Instead I speak as the Father has taught Me. 29 The One who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to Him.” 30 As He spoke this, many believed in Him.

31 Therefore Jesus said to those Judeans who believed in Him, “If you abide and continue inside of My word, you are truly My disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are the seed of Abraham, and we have been under bondage to no one, ever. How is it that You say, ‘You will become free?’” 34 Jesus answered them, “Let it be so, it is so, as I say to you, everyone doing sin, that which is disconnected from God, is a slave of sin. 35 Now, the slave does not remain in the house into the age, but only a son remains into the age. 35 If the Son makes you free, you will be truly free.”

37 “I know that you are the seed of Abraham; but you seek to kill Me, because My word does not receive a place inside of you. 31 That which I have seen in the presence of the Father, I speak; but you do what you have heard from your ‘father.’” 39 They answered Him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus replied, “If you were children born out from Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 Yet you seek to kill Me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, truth that I heard in the presence of God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You are doing the works of your father.” They said to Him, “We have not been born of sexual immorality; we have one Father, God.”

42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I come out from God and am here. More than that, I have not come for Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why is it that you do not know the meaning of My speech? It is because you are not able to hear My word. 44 You are of the “father,” the devil, and the desires of your father you choose to do. He was a murderer right from the start. He does not stay inside the truth, for there is no truth inside of him. Whenever he might speak a lie, he speaks out from his own person; for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet, even though I speak the truth, you do not believe Me! 46 Which of you shows Me to be guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me? The one who is out from God hears the words of God. You do not hear because you are not out from God.”

48 The Judeans answered Him, “Did we not rightly say that You are a Samaritan and possess a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not possess a demon; but I honor My Father even while you dishonor Me. 50 I do not now seek My own glory, but there is One seeking and judging. 51 Let it be so, it is so, as I say to you, if anyone keeps, guards, watches over My word, he shall never gaze upon or experience death even into the age.”

52 The Judeans therefore said to Him, “Now we know that you possess a demon. Abraham died, as well as the prophets, and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste or experience death into the age.’ 53 Are You greater than our father Abraham who died? And the prophets died! Who do You make Yourself to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing. It is My Father glorifying Me, of whom you say that He is your God. 55 Yet you have not known Him; I, on the other hand, do perceive and consider Him. If I were to say that I do not perceive and consider Him, I would be like you, a liar. But I do perceive and consider Him, and I keep, guard, and watch over His word. 56 Abraham your father rejoiced in the opportunity to look upon My day, and he saw it and rejoiced. {Abraham is a Christian today.}

57 For that reason, the Judeans said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus replied, “Let it be so, it is so, as I say to you, before Abraham became, I Am.” 59 They took up stones in response, that they might throw them at Him. Jesus hid Himself, however, and went out of the temple, and, passing through their midst, He departed.

9:1 As Jesus and His disciples were walking by, they saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked Him, “Master, who sinned, this man or his parents that he should be born blind?”

3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man sinned, nor his parents, but that the works of God should be made visible inside of him. 4 It is necessary for us to work the works of the One who sent Me while it is day. Night is coming when no one is able to work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world-cosmos.”

6 Having said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay out of the spittle and applied the clay to the blind man’s eyes. 7 And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which means Sent). The man went in response, and washed, and returned seeing. 8 His neighbors and those having seen him before, that he was a beggar, were then saying, “Is this not he who was sitting and begging?” 9 Some were saying, “It is he,” but others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am he.”

10 They then asked him, “How were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made clay and spread it upon my eyes, and He said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ Having gone, then, and having washed, I received sight.” 12 And they said to him, “Where is He?” He answered, “I don’t know.”

13 They brought him who was once blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now, it was Sabbath on which day Jesus had made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 Therefore, the Pharisees also asked him how he had received sight. And he said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see!” 16 Some of the Pharisees said in response, “This Man is not from the presence of God, for He does not keep the Sabbath. On the other hand, others said, “How is a sinful man able to do such signs?” And there was a split among them. 17 For that reason, they said again to the blind man, “What do you say concerning Him, that He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet!”

18 Then the Judeans did not believe him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called his parents. 19 And they asked them, “Is this your son, of whom you say that he was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents then answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 How he sees now, however, we are not aware, or who opened his eyes, we are not aware. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak concerning himself.” 22 His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Judeans, for the Judeans had already agreed together that if anyone should speak Christ, he would be kicked out of the synagogue. 23 Because of this his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”

24 They then called the man who had been blind a second time and said to him, “Give glory to God. We perceive that this man is a sinner. 25 He then answered, “Whether He is a sinner, I am not aware. One thing I am aware of, that I once was blind, but now I see.” 26 Then they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “I told you already and you did not listen. Why do you wish to hear again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”

28 And they reviled him and said, “You are a disciple of that One; we, however are disciples of Moses. 29 We are aware and consider that God has spoken to Moses; this man, however, we are not aware of the place from where He is.” 30 The man answered them, “This is an amazing thing, that you cannot perceive from where He is, and yet, He opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not hear sinners, but if anyone reverences God and does His desire, him He hears. 32 Out of this age, it has never been heard that anyone has opened the eyes of one who was born blind. 33 If this man were not from the presence of God, He could not do anything.” 34 They said to him, “You were born entirely inside of sins, and you would teach us?” And they threw him out.

35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out and, having found him, He said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 He answered, “And who is He, Lord, that I may believe into Him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen Him, and He is the One speaking to you.” 38 And he said, I believe, Lord.” And he worshiped Him.

39 And Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” 40 The Pharisees who were with Him heard these things, and they said to Him, “Are we not also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not possess sin; Since you say, ‘We see,’ however, your sin and disconnection from God remains.”
