19:1 At that point, Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown made of thorns, and put it on His head, and cast a purple robe around Him. 3 They came up to Him saying, “Hail, King of the Judeans!” They kept striking Him with sticks and with the palms of their hands. 4 Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look and see, I bring Him out to you so that you may know that I find no cause of accusation inside of Him.” 5 Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!” 6 Then, when the chief priests and their servants saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him; for I find no cause for accusation inside of Him.” 7 The Judeans answered him, “We have a law, and according to the law, He must die, because He made Himself the Son of God.” 8 When Pilate heard this word, he was even more afraid. 9 And he went into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, “From whence are You?” But Jesus did not answer. 10 Pilate said to Him, “Did I not speak to You? Do you not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” • 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority against Me, if it were not given to you from above. Because of this, the one who turned Me over to you has the greater sin.” 12 From this moment, Pilate sought to release Him; but the Judeans cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar. Anyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.” 13 Therefore Pilate, having heard these words, brought Jesus out and sat down upon the judgment seat in a place called the Stone Pavement; and in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 It was now the Day of Preparation of the Passover, at about the sixth hour. And he said to the Judeans, “Behold your King!” 15 They cried out in response, “Away with Him. Away! Crucify Him.” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priest answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 Therefore, he delivered Him to them, that He might be crucified. They then took hold of Jesus. • 17 And bearing His own cross [v], He went out to the place called the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him and with Him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in between. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Judeans. 20 Many of the Judeans, therefore, read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Judeans then said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Judeans,’ but that He said, ‘I am the King of the Judeans.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” 23 Then the soldiers, as they crucified Jesus, took His garments and divided them into four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. The tunic, however, was seamless, woven from the top throughout all. 24 So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it up, but let’s cast lots for it, whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled that said: “They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing, they cast a lot (Psalm 22:18). Indeed, the soldiers did these things [w]. 25 Now, the mother of Jesus, Mary, along with His mother’s sister who was the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene, were standing near the cross of Jesus. • 26 Then Jesus, seeing His mother and the disciple whom He loved [John] standing near her, said to His mother, “Woman, look at your son.” 27 Then He said to [John], “Look at your mother.” And from that hour [John] took her as his own mother. • 28 After this, knowing that all things had been accomplished, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I thirst.” 29 A vessel full of sour wine was sitting there with a sponge in it filled with the sour wine, and a stalk of hyssop placed around it. They brought it to His mouth. • 30 Then, when Jesus took the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He yielded over His Spirit. 31 Because it was the time of Preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath, which Sabbath was a high day, therefore the Judeans asked Pilate that their legs be broken and that they be taken away. 32 The soldiers came, then, and broke the legs of the first and then of the other, who were crucified with Him. 33 When they came to Jesus, however, they saw that He was already dead, and so they did not break His legs. • 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear and immediately out came blood and water [x]. 35 And the one who saw this [I – John] has borne witness, and his testimony is true. And he knows the truth that he is speaking, that you also might believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled; “Not one bone of Him will be broken” (Psalm 34:20). 37 And again, another Scripture says, “They will look on the One they have pierced” (Psalm 22:16). 38 After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus (concealed, however, because of the fear of the Judeans), asked Pilate if he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. He came then and took away His body. 39 Nicodemus also came, the one who had come to Him by night at the first, bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred litras. 40 They then took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices as is the custom among the Judeans to prepare for burial. 41 Now, there was a garden in the place where He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one was yet laid. 42 Therefore, on account of the Preparation of the Judeans, because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus there. |
